Mr. Teras Ram was aged about 45 years and was a handloom weaver. He is from the Chamar community of Baisa village in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh state. Due to the decline in the handloom weaving industry, Ram was finding it difficult to make a living from weaving. So Ram started to sell sweets and salt door to door for exchange of old goods. Mukesh [picture 1] is three year old. He is the son of Mr. Ram Lagan. They belong to the Chamar community of Bhaisa village in Kerakat administrative block of Jaunpur district. Mukesh may die due to malnutrition if immediate assistance is not provided to him. Mukesh is suffering from Grade IV Malnutrition and he weighs only 5.5 kilograms. Mr. Kammal Musahar is from the Musahar community of Sarsanwa village. Kammal was about 50 years old. Kammal and his family were trying to make a living by selling plates made from leaves. The family that includes Kammal, son Lalai, Lalai’s wife Radha and their daughters Sunita and Munita could hardly have a meal a day with their earnings from selling leaf plates. UPDATE (India): A handloom weaver suffering from tuberculosis and poverty for 22 years

The AHRC has reported eight cases of handloom weavers suffering from tuberculosis and poverty on 27 September 2007. They are living in Lohta village, Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh. Many villagers in Lohta are engaged in the weaving industry are now losing their livelihood due to introduction of power looms. They are also facing competition due to the import of cheap foreign substitutes from countries like China. All the weavers in the earlier eight cases are suffering from tuberculosis for at least three months up to eight years. The lack of livelihood and the failure of government policies related to public heath service are taking their lives away. For further information about this cases please see HA-012-2007. UPDATE (India): Alina Shahin passed away yesterday

Alina Sahin [picture 1] was 18 months old and the youngest daughter of Mr. Ansar Ahmed. Ansar has two daughters and a son. Ansar’s wife died six months before and Alina is taken care of by her paternal grandmother. The AHRC had issued a hunger alert on September 3, 2007 expressing concern over Alina’s situation.
