Weekly Roundup, Episode 96

This week AHRC TV first highlights the 70th anniversary of the birth of the United Nations with excerpts from the recent Asian Alliance against Torture conference, where delegates discussed the future of the UN. Bijo Francis, AHRC’s Executive Director, also gives his take on the significant achievements but also colossal failures of the UN Universal Human Rights project (full interview will be uploaded to AHRC’s YouTube Channel).

AHRC TV then briefly notes the recent passing of the annual day of remembering the tens of thousands of disappeared in Sri Lanka. As has been done for the last 25 years, family members, human rights defenders and religious leaders gathered at the Monument for the Disappeared near Colombo to lay flowers and speak of the importance of fighting for justice for the disappeared.

Next, AHRC TV interviews Mahi Chowdhury, former Member of Parliament in Bangladesh. Chowdhury expresses his grave concerns about Bangladesh’s descent into lawlessness and authoritarianism.

Finally, the Weekly Roundup closes with a short interview with the Vice President of the Malaysian Bar, who was recently in Hong Kong for a meeting organised by ILAC and AHRC. George Varughese outlines how the Malaysian Bar uses activism to defend the rule of law in the country.

The bulletin can be watched online at AHRC TV YouTube. We welcome both human rights feeds to be considered for weekly newsbulletin, and your suggestions to improve our news channel. Please write to news@ahrc.asia. You can also watch our Weekly Roundup on Facebook.
