Weekly Roundup Episode 21

Today the AHRC releases the 21th Episode of the Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup.

In this week’s programme we continue our International Women’s Day coverage of stories from around Asia on women’s human rights.

We start in Sri Lanka with stories of brutal and widespread domestic violence, entirely neglected by police, courts, and politicians.

In Pakistan, peace negotiations with the Taliban threatens to further erode what little freedoms exists for women in the country, a country that is near the bottom of the list in global gender gap surveys.

We hear from AHRC’s Anjuman Ara Begum about the great, untapped potential of utilising more women in peace and security negotiations arena.

We also speak with Maguindanao massacre widow Myrna Reblando about the difficulties she has faced after being thrown into the public spotlight and forced to leave her country after the brutal murder of her journalist husband.

March 12 marked 10 years since Thai human rights lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit’s disappeared from the streets of Bangkok. His widow, Angkhana, spoke on the occasion of the anniversary.

Extra-judicial executions continue in broad daylight in Bangladesh with the paramilitary Rapid Action Battalion still acting with complete impunity.

In our segment, Voices of Survivors: this week we hear from rights activist Shahed Kayes who was kidnapped and very nearly killed in Bangladesh.

The bulletin can be watched online at AHRC YouTube. We welcome both human rights feeds to be considered for weekly news bulletin and your suggestions to improve our news channel. Please write to news@ahrc.asia. You can also watch our Weekly Roundup on Facebook.
